One of the few trainers in the world to have trained 100 GROUP ONE WINNERS.

David Payne started his career in the saddle as an apprentice jockey in 1963 and rode for seven seasons in South Africa before weight problems forced him out of the saddle and into the training ranks. David was a successful jockey haven ridden in 2221 races, with a creditable 283 winners to his name.

Midway through the 1970-71 season a young 24yo David Payne was granted his trainers licence and his first starter Early Bid crossed the finishing line first. A great start to an unbelievable career which includes Natal champion trainer on 23 occasions and 105 winners in the 1990-91 season.

David emigrated to Australia in 2002 and was granted stables at Randwick in July 2002 and with limited horses he has won the Flight Stakes Gr1 with Unearthly, the Gr2 Chelmsford twice with Unearthly and Nevis, the Gr2 Royal Sovereign with Flying Pegasus, the Gr3 Black Opal with Uber and the Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes with Flying Pegasus plus numerous Listed Races.

David keeps his team to around thirty horses and his hands on approach shines through on race day when it matters.
